Chucho Valdés

“One of the world’s great virtuosic pianists.”
The New York Times
Chucho Valdés is arguably the most influential Cuban pianist in the world. In 1972, Valdés, along with Paquito D’Rivera and Arturo Sandoval, formed Irakere, and the group proceeded to create a new identity for Latin jazz. Irakere became a hotbed of musical innovation, where both Afro-Cuban jazz and Cuban popular dance music were allowed to evolve, becoming a tremendous force on a global scale. Chucho Valdés has carved out a spot as a legendary jazz pianist of his generation who has forever changed the landscape of Latin jazz music. This legend returns to Weill Hall to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Irakere with his stellar band, the Afro-Cuban Messengers, for an evening of unprecedented energy. More Info

Pedrito Martinez

“The Pedrito Martinez Group is writing a new chapter in
Cuban music history”
NPR All Things Considered

With pure polyrhythmic precision, the Pedrito Martinez Group is a joyful adventure of fresh Afro-Cuban spirit. Born in Havana, Martinez has developed a captivating sound steeped in Cuban history but also informed by North American rhythmic currents, an approach that The New York Times described as “complex, blenderized Africa-to-the-New-World funk.” Martinez’s complex rumba and batá drumming is joined by keyboardist Edgar Pantoja-Aleman’s range and groove, Alvaro Benavides (electric bass) and Jhair Sala (percussion). When Martinez channels the beautiful Yoruba chants – still used by Cubans to address African gods – the group’s virtuosity is complete. More Info
